Course overview
This course helps students become career-ready through participation in an approved experiential learning opportunity, such as a professional internship, or law study tour. These activities enable students to understand the environmental, social and/or cultural contexts for law, and to build on their understanding of legal theory by gaining insight into the practical operation of law in professional, institutional, and community contexts, including regional communities. The course aims to add depth and context to students' existing legal knowledge while developing professional and reflective skills. Students will complete agreed tasks under the supervision of the course coordinator, drawing on their experiential learning activities. Depending on the nature of the experience, students may engage in workplace activities, visits to legal institutions, interactions with legal professionals, justice sector stakeholders, or regional communities. Throughout the course, students will reflect on a range of matters such as cultural and societal challenges to which the law responds, the impacts of law on people and communities, legal processes, professional practice, and the development of their legal skills and professional identity.
Course learning outcomes
- Undertake self-directed research in law, analyse and synthesise legal information and materials.
- Apply law to complex practical issues, and critique the operation of law from a policy perspective.
- Structure and sustain concise and cohesive written arguments for a legal audience.
- Analyse the impact of law from policy perspectives and in the context of social and cultural diversity.
- Internship stream: Undertake practical legal work at the highest level and reflect on their abilities to effectively undertake legal work in a practical setting. Study tour stream: Critically evaluate the operation of laws impacting on rural areas and communities.
