Course overview
This course will extend students' knowledge of the development of story from traditional literature to modern forms of narrative. Students will analyse myths, legends and folk and fairytales from many cultures in order to trace the development of narrative forms and their enduring interest and cultural relevance. They will become familiar with narratological and psychological theories relevant to analysis of the art and techniques of storytelling in oral and text forms, from traditional to contemporary fiction.

Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate critical understanding of a variety of narrative theories and structures
- Analyse literary texts using accepted technical terms and critical concepts
- Relate the socialising influences of narrative across various social and historical contexts
- Use critical theory to analyse power relations between characters in texts
- Interpret and describe the significances of aesthetic decisions involving metaphor, poetics, form, and structure
- Confidently apply understanding of critical theory in conventional essays and creative nonfiction.
