Course overview

This course aims to develop mathematical methods that apply to important problems in the life sciences, including population models, disease dynamics, pattern formation and cancer growth. These techniques will include ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and stochastic modelling.

  • Deterministic models in biology
  • Stochastic models in biology

Course learning outcomes

  • Devise deterministic and stochastic mathematical models for biological systems.
  • Apply analytical techniques to deterministic models described by ordinary and partial differential equations.
  • Apply analytical and simulation techniques to stochastic models.
  • Synthesise deterministic and stochastic approaches to modelling biological processes in the context of biochemical reaction networks and disease dynamics.
  • Implement mathematical models for biological science using computational software (Julia).
  • Interpret analytical and/or numerical solutions to mathematical models and contextualise the results with respect to the life sciences.
