Course overview
This course will enable students to develop a sound understanding of the healthcare for the neonate with complex needs and demonstrate integration of woman-centred and family inclusive care in the midwifery management. Contents include: assessment of the healthy neonate and comparison to the unwell, compromised or preterm neonate; basic embryology related to specific neonatal health conditions, pathophysiology of neonatal health conditions; care planning and midwifery management of the neonate with complex needs; neonatal resuscitation; use of technology and clinical skills; pharmacology in neonatal care; evidence-based midwifery practice in caring for the neonate with complex needs; incorporation of woman-centred and family inclusive care in the midwifery management of the neonate with complex needs; legal, ethical and cultural considerations in neonatal care; equity and rights; teamwork and communication; maternal and neonatal safety and quality; inter-professional collaboration; inquiry based learning.

Course learning outcomes
- Recognise the unwell, compromised and/or preterm neonate compared with the healthy term neonate.
- Explain the pathophysiology of common neonatal health conditions.
- Demonstrate the provision of midwifery care for common neonatal health conditions in a variety of settings.
- Demonstrate appropriate clinical skills and use of technology in the care of the neonate with complex needs.
- Recognise the legal, ethical, psychosocial and cultural considerations in the care and support of the mother/infant dyad with complex needs.
- Integrate best available evidence in the midwifery care of the neonate with complex needs and their family.
