Course overview

Students will develop competencies in designing research that incorporates appropriate conceptual, methodological and ethical requirements to inform nursing, midwifery and health care practice, knowledge and research. Nature of knowledge; advancing nursing, midwifery and health care through research; major issues and debates in contemporary nursing; midwifery and health care research; research paradigms, theories and frameworks; the research process; developing research questions; different research designs and methods; searching databases; critical appraisal of literature; literature reviews; research ethics; research proposals.

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the role of research in advancing nursing, midwifery and health care practice.
  • Explain the philosophical and practical differences of the major research paradigms and their implications for nursing, midwifery and health related research.
  • Critically evaluate research designs, tools and methods in terms of their application and relevance to nursing, midwifery and health related research
  • Identify, critically appraise and synthesize published research to develop a clearly defined research question investigating advanced clinical practice.
  • Present a review of critically appraised literature linked to a clearly defined research question
  • Identify the components of a rigorous and ethically defensible research proposal to answer a specific research question
