Course overview

Students will demonstrate the advanced extended nursing practice expected of a nurse practitioner in their specialty and context through extended, supervised immersion in the clinical role. Content in this field based course is determined by the student’s specialty context of practice and learning objectives. Students will develop their capability to function in the extended scope of clinical practice required of the nurse practitioner in their clinical context and demonstrate progress toward achievement of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Nurse Practitioner Standards for Practice.

Course learning outcomes

  • Conduct advanced comprehensive, relevant and holistic health assessment of clients.
  • Demonstrate advanced diagnostic reasoning in using assessment data and best available evidence to inform clinical decisions.
  • Demonstrate advanced clinical proficiency, reflective practice and a high level of confidence in a range of procedures, treatments and interventions that are evidence based and informed by specialist knowledge.
  • Demonstrate skills in accessing established and evolving knowledge in clinical and social sciences, and applying this knowledge to client care.
  • Establish a therapeutic relationship with the client and relevant individuals or groups recognising and respecting cultural identity and lifestyle choices.
  • Demonstrate progress toward achievement of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia Nurse Practitioner Standards for Practice.

  • must have completed all of NURS5004 Becoming a Nurse Practitioner/NURS5029 Research for Advancing Nursing, Midwifery and Health Care/NURS5904 Clinical Inquiry/NURS6904 Advanced Health Assessment, Diagnostics and Investigations/NURS6905 Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Nursing Practice
