Course overview

This course aims to develop skills in nutrition assessment, behavioural analysis and person-centred nutrition care. Students will critically evaluate dietary intake, nutrition status and lifestyle behaviours using contemporary assessment methods, and gain an understanding of behaviour change frameworks and motivational interviewing techniques to support health improvement. Through case-based learning, students will integrate assessment findings, behavioural determinants and sociocultural influences to develop appropriate nutrition and lifestyle strategies for health promotion and chronic disease prevention.

Course learning outcomes

  • Collect, analyse and interpret dietary, anthropometric, and lifestyle assessment data to identify nutrition-related priorities and health risks.
  • Apply evidence-based nutrition, physical activity and weight management principles to support health promotion and chronic disease prevention
  • Analyse determinants of health behaviours using behaviour change frameworks, including COM-B, to inform the selection of appropriate behaviour change strategies
  • Develop person-centred nutrition and lifestyle recommendations that are tailored to individual needs and responsive to cultural, socioeconomic, environmental influences on health.
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills and identify the principles and techniques of motivational interviewing to support collaborative behaviour change and professional development
  • Work both independently and collaboratively using purposeful reflective practice and apply critical thinking to evaluate communication strategies
