Course overview
This course will enable students to develop the knowledge, skills and expertise necessary to undertake a community needs assessment and plan a substantial collaborative project with a community agency. Philosophical and theoretical basis for collaborative and participatory community practice. Processes and strategies relevant to community need assessment. Liaison with community based agencies to undertake project scoping and community needs assessment. Project management skills. Proposal writing. Ethical issues and dilemmas in community work.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the application of population health and social health philosophy to occupational therapy practice.
- Effectively undertake a strength-based, community needs assessment in collaboration with key stakeholders.
- Develop a collaborative project plan based upon the needs analysis and project management strategies.
- Evidence effective use of culturally safe participatory techniques effective in working with a community and for working with a team.
- Evidence capacity for personal critical reflection through self awareness of skills and competencies achieved and those requiring further development.
- Demonstrate professional conduct and ethical practice.
