Course overview
In this course, we explore some of the most puzzling metaphysical issues about material reality and the place of humanity within it: the nature of time and space; the persistence and identity of things over time and through change; and the prospects of human agency in the world discovered by modern physics.
Course learning outcomes
- Demonstrate understanding of some central philosophical debates in contemporary metaphysics and their broader context.
- Analyse contemporary and historical argumentative texts and extract the relevant views and arguments from them.
- Accurately represent and explicate philosophical arguments, orally and in short and extended written forms.
- Evaluate philosophical and scientific arguments about time, change and free will, providing appropriate grounds for those evaluations.
- Develop and present a sustained and effective argumentative case in written form, identifying and using relevant evidence while addressing potential counterarguments and objections.
