Course overview

This is an introduction to university physics for those who have studied SACE Stage 2 Physics. It enables students to develop their knowledge and understanding of the fundamental laws and principles of physics and their practical applications, and to develop an appreciation of how these laws and principles operate in the world around them. Topics covered will include measurement and uncertainty, mechanics of particles, thermal physics and electricity and magnetism.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply physics principles and concepts to physical situations to describe and explain those situations qualitatively.
  • Use mathematical methods and computational techniques to setup and solve quantitative problems relating to physical situations.
  • Critically reflect on the solution to a problem to assess the reasonableness of that solution, and that appropriate units and significant figures have been used.
  • Apply scientific methods experimentally and analyse the resulting experimental data, accounting for uncertainties inherent within the experimental methods, techniques, and equipment used.
  • Work cooperatively in a team to solve theoretical and practical problems.
  • Document the processes and approaches used, and solution arrived at, when solving problems and working in an experimental or laboratory environment.

  • Must have completed all of MATH1000 Foundations in Mathematics/PHYS1000 Foundations in Physics OR must have completed SACE Stage 2 Physics and SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Methods
