Course overview

Students develop their understanding of space science and astrophysics topics including protostars and star formation; stellar interiors and stellar evolution; supernovae and pulsars; introduction to the heliosphere; introduction to the local space environment; introduction to telescopes and astrophysical measurements.

  • Astrophysical Scales, Units, and Coordinate Systems
  • Astrophysical Emission Processes and their Detection with Telescopes
  • Plasmas, The Sun, and Space Physics
  • The Evolution and Death of Stars

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply physical principles to describe and explain a variety of space plasma and astrophysical phenomena and processes.
  • Identify relevant characteristics and limitations of instrumentation designed for modern astrophysics and space science observations.
  • Use a range of equipment or archival data to make and prepare measurements of space plasma or astrophysical phenomena.
  • Interpret measurements and observations of astrophysical or space plasma phenomena to infer the relevant physical processes.
  • Work in a small team to complete and report on a space science or astrophysics project.
  • Identify and extract relevant astrophysical concepts from the published literature in physics and astrophysics.
