Course overview

In this advanced experimental course, students engage in experiments in selected areas including atomic and nuclear physics, optics and electromagnetism. They also complete a practical analogue  

electronics component. 

  • Electronics (2 Units) -Students to complete all of the following topics
  • Experiments (4 Units) - Students to complete at least four of the following topics (experiments)

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe key components of analogue electronics including transistors and operational amplifiers and their use in electronic filtering and waveform generation
  • Conduct experiments to investigate important physics phenomena
  • Use a digital oscilloscope that is interfaced to a computer to optimally sample a waveform and utilise fast Fourier techniques to understand the signal
  • Keep a scientific record of experimental work, analyse the results of experiments, and use appropriate techniques to estimate the experimental uncertainty associated with measurements, to reach non-trivial conclusions about the experiment
  • Work cooperatively in a team to solve practical problems
  • Use the tools, methodologies, language and conventions of physics to test and communicate ideas and explanations
