This course extends the concepts of nuclear physics and theoretical and applied radiation physics.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe fundamental aspects of the structure of the nucleus, radioactive decay, nuclear reactions and the interaction of radiation and matter and explain them in terms of applicable principles of physics.
  • Apply knowledge of nuclear and radiation physics and appropriate mathematics to formulate solutions to problems.
  • Discuss the connection of nuclear and radiation physics with other physics disciplines - solid state, elementary particle physics, radiochemistry, astronomy.
  • Describe applications of nuclear and radiation physics in medical diagnostics and therapy, astrophysics, geology, archaeology and other fields.
  • Describe experimental techniques used (or developed) for nuclear physics purposes (logic circuits, gamma cameras, semiconductor detectors) and discuss their influence on the development of new technologies.
  • Explore an application of nuclear and/or radiation physics and communicate their understanding to a group of their peers in a short presentation.
