Course overview

The aim of this course is to provide students with an understanding of key concepts of social and population health and their application to socially, culturally, and politically responsive occupational therapy practice. Key concepts of social and population health - the impact of culture, socialisation, the structural basis of inequity and social difference and differential impacts on health outcomes - gender, ethnicity, racism, class and age. Introduction to the Australian health system including its cultural and political context.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate an understanding of key international concepts of social and population health.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of social and population health amongst diverse Australian populations with particular reference to social determinants of health and ill-health.
  • Demonstrate an understanding to the structural nature (and impacts) of inequality and difference
  • Describe the range of services in the Australian Health system and its cultural and political context.
  • Analyse the impact of colonisation on Aboriginal peoples' access to health and health services.
