Course overview

This course examines the relationships of social, biological, behavioural and cognitive variables to health. It covers those aspects of the social environment that influence health and illness outcomes including interactions among family members and between healthcare consumers and healthcare providers. Risk factors for health-compromising behaviours are also discussed including strategies for their modification. Students are also educated about interprofessional practice and collaboration.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate understanding of the biological, behavioural, cognitive and social determinants of health, and risk factors for health- compromising behaviours and strategies for their modification, across the lifespan.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of individual, group and community-based approaches to the prevention and management of major identifiable health conditions (acute and chronic).
  • Demonstrate the capacity to critically evaluate research in health psychology and use this knowledge to develop evidence-informed interventions and client resources.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of inter-professional learning and practice.

  • Must have completed BUSI5162 Evidence-based Practice (Health) AND must have completed PSYC5043 Interviewing and Intervention (Health) AND must have completed PSYC5049 Psychological Assessment (Clinical and Health) AND must have completed PSYC5042 Psychopathology and Clinical Practice OR must have completed PSYC5066 Evidence Based Practice OR must have completed PSYC5070 Interviewing and Intervention
