Course overview

The course will provide an understanding of all the aspects in translating scientific discoveries into products or systems of value to society. The course aims to provide learners with in-depth knowledge of the innovation process and the key components of commercialisation, with particular emphasis on science and technology-based innovation. By completion of the course learners will be prepared to articulate these elements within future courses in the program as well as engage with external partners as graduates.

Course learning outcomes

  • Describe the key components and processes involved in the commercialisation of biotechnology research and discovery
  • Understand the nature and structure of Biotechnology companies, how they operate, and what is required to work in the industry
  • Understand how biotechnology companies are valued and funded, and how this impacts strategic planning
  • Understand the nature of intellectual property, the importance and limitations of patents, the patenting process, patent infringement and management
  • Develop workplace skills necessary to succeed in a fast-paced team environment in the biotech industry
