Course overview
Contemporary social life is mediated, meaning that we comprehend the world and act within it in ways influenced (although not determined) by media and communication technologies, whether that be engagement with online social media content, chatting with others via mobile devices or reading legacy newspapers. The aim of this course is to develops students’ capacity to critically analyse media content, comprehend the socio-political implications of different media systems, and produce policies and programs that can foster a resilient democracy. Such is the ‘mediatiation’ of society, the knowledge and skills students attain in the course are relevant across all vocational areas, while being specifically applicable to students whose future work that may involve social research, social policy, public relations, and national security.

Course learning outcomes
- Interpret media content and media consumption for its social and political consequences
- Identify what is distinctive about contemporary media systems
- Propose media policy recommendations that draw from sociological research and perspectives
- Demonstrate literacy in social research through practice in effectively locating or producing then evaluating, and synthesising data
- Constructing theoretically informed and evidence-based arguments in real time, and effectively communicating these via oral forms
