Course overview

This course seeks to investigate the diversity of links between human and migration and socio-economic development. It aims to uncover the relationships between migration, demographic and social change, economic development (especially urbanisation), climate (environmental) change, health issues (e.g. the COVID-19 pandemic), and geopolitics. Australia and the Asia-Pacific region will provide case studies illustrative of the main patterns of mobility and development outcomes. Students will be equipped with valuable transferable skills, e.g., critical thinking, problem solving, report writing.

  • Migration theories and the migration-development nexus
  • Links between environment, pandemics, urbanisation, and mobility
  • Migration programs and diaspora engagement

Course learning outcomes

  • Explain the course concepts, patterns, and theoretical frameworks that underpin the study of global migration and its relationship to international development.
  • Analyse the complex, multi-directional relationships between migration process and core development dimensions, including economic growth, social change, and environmental stress.
  • Evaluate the formation and impacts of national migration policies, with particular reference to Australia, assessing their consequences for population structure and migrant settlement outcomes.
  • Synthesise evidence from academic and case-study research to construct coherent, well-reasoned arguments on contemporary migration and development issues, communicated effectively in written and oral forms.
