Course overview
This course will develop students’ critical understanding of child development theories, and the social and emotional needs of children across the lifespan. Students will be introduced to core theories of child development, approaches to child wellbeing child protection practice, and working with families in social work contexts including the social constructions of children, youth and families, the impact of the social, emotional, psychological and physical development of children, the mental health and well-being of children
Course learning outcomes
- Describe key theories of child development in the context of family relationships across the lifespan.
- Explore major impacts of child abuse and neglect on child development.
- Identify and articulate the social-emotional needs of children and appropriate social work responses to building children’s resilience and positive mental health and wellbeing.
- Recognise risk factors that may adversely affect children’s development.
- Develop and articulate an empowerment and strengths approach based in child development knowledge.
