Course overview
This course will develop students’ knowledge and understanding of international, national and state policies and legislation concerning children’s wellbeing and protection. It aims to develop students’ ability to apply this framework to identify and respond to the needs of children/young people and their families in Australia. The course is designed to offer a theoretically informed understanding of the political, social, and professional context of working with children and young people and will explore the place of systems and communities in supporting child wellbeing. Students will develop knowledge and competencies in working with children and families from diverse backgrounds applying anti-oppressive, culturally safe and trauma-informed practice models.
Course learning outcomes
- Apply course knowledge to identify and respond to the needs of children, young people, and their families in Australia.
- Critically analyse contemporary issues facing children and young people in Australia and globally.
- Evaluate the role of social workers in collaborating with other professionals and in different organizational settings to address the needs of vulnerable children, young people, and their families.
- Demonstrate professional and ethical judgment where the best interest of the child is paramount.
