Course overview

Building on prior knowledge of child development theories, policy, legislation and professional practice with children, this course focuses on effective measures to safeguard children by promoting their wellbeing in the context of families, communities and societies. Students will apply advanced knowledge and skills in understanding child protection as ‘everyone’s business’ as outlined in the National Child Protection policy. Students will investigate international, national and state innovations regarding child protection in government and non-government services. Strategies and services which promote children’s wellbeing and protection are compared and contrasted to identify elements of current best practice. The place of families, systems and communities, in supporting child wellbeing and protecting children will be examined. Child focused and inclusive skills appropriate for practice with Aboriginal and culturally diverse communities will be developed throughout the course.
