Course overview
This course will develop students’ specialist knowledge of practice theories and skills for social work with children and families in a range of practice settings. The course will explore different theoretical approaches and social work assessment and intervention focusing on children and families. Students will develop specialised knowledge about intervention and preventative strategies in situations of child abuse, family violence and child and family well-being. This includes how trauma, abuse and neglect affect children and human development, as well as the strengths and resilience of children and families. Students will critically analyse the impact of child protection policies in the context of historical policies that affect First Nations families and communities
Course learning outcomes
- Critically and ethically respond to child abuse, neglect and family violence drawing on relevant social work practice approaches
- Explore the place of evidence-based practice in the development of social work interventions in child protection.
- Develop and promote a preventative approach to child abuse with reference to the cultural and linguistic diversity of our community.
- Critically explore the impact of child protection policy and service provision on First Nations children, families and communities.
- Utilise specialised professional knowledge to identify indications of child abuse and neglect and what constitutes an appropriate response.
