Course overview
In this course, students will gain the ability to critically analyse constructions of human rights and their application to social work and community development. Students will develop an understanding of international and Australian human rights laws and treaties including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Australian human rights legislation, organisations, policies and practices and community development theories and frameworks. Students will critically analyse philosophies, concepts and theories of human rights, culture, gender, community development, social justice and advance a human rights-informed framework for social work practice with disadvantaged sectors including women, children, refugees, migrants, vulnerable older people, people with mental or physical illness or disability and First Nations People.
Course learning outcomes
- Critically analyse human rights concepts, frameworks and policies as they relate to social justice and social action
- Critically analyse Australia's engagement with international human rights legislation and conventions
- Critically analyse relevant policies and practices as they apply to disadvantaged groups and communities, including First Nations People, from a community development and human rights perspective
- Demonstrate a specialist understanding of relevant community development theories, frameworks and practices in social work from a human rights perspective.
- Demonstrate an understanding of how community development and human rights concepts, frameworks and policies can be activated in social work with disadvantaged groups and communities, including First Nations People.
