Course overview

This course teaches students how to write, craft and critique prose in a range of forms. Students will learn and practice the fundamentals of fiction, such as plot, setting, character, point-of-view and style, and will be exposed to a range of theories associated with crafting these elements. Students will also develop their critical skills through reading innovative and engaging fiction and will learn to reflect critically on their own and others’ writing.

Course learning outcomes

  • Analyse and reflect upon the use of creative writing techniques in written works;
  • Close read and analyse contemporary writing examples and their critical contexts;
  • Evaluate and apply methodologies and/or theories to fictional outputs;
  • Create and edit pieces of fiction to form a complete work;
  • Evaluate creative writing produced by peers to offer feedback;
