Admission criteria

To be eligible, an applicant must have achieved at least one of the following minimum entry requirements and demonstrate they fulfil any prerequisite and essential criteria for admission. In cases where there are more eligible applicants than available places, admission will be competitive with ranks based on the entry criteria.

A completed bachelor (AQF level 7) or bachelor honours (AQF level 8) degree or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution; OR
A completed nested or related graduate certificate (AQF level 8) or higher or equivalent from a recognised higher education institution.

Notes

1. Applicants who have completed a Bachelor degree or a Graduate Certificate in Aboriginal or Indigenous studies are eligible to enter the program with 0.5 EFTSL (18 units) Advanced Standing in lieu of these courses and complete the program in 1.5 years of full time study or equivalent part time study.
2. Applicants who have completed a Graduate Diploma in Aboriginal or Indigenous studies are eligible to enter the program with 1.0 EFTSL (36 units) Advanced Standing in lieu of these courses and complete the program in 1 year of full time study or equivalent part time study.

Notes

1. Students will be supported in their negotiations with workplaces, community groups and organisations regarding their Thesis.
2. The thesis to be undertaken must be negotiated with the appropriate Aboriginal people/community/organisation to determine whether the issue being investigated addresses their concerns and is deemed to fit with their priorities and aspirations. The thesis must meet the ethics approval and research design requirements and procedures of the relevant Aboriginal people; it must also meet the ethics approval and research design requirements and procedures of the University of South Australia.
3. Students not undertaking Pitjantjatjara Culture and Language can undertake an elective from those listed.
4. The Aboriginal Studies Master Class is a two day intensive led by leading Aboriginal scholars and international Indigenous researchers. If this course is not offered in any given year the students may take an approved elective in lieu.
