Why Professional Certificate in Principles of Test and Evaluation?

Overview

Upskill rapidly with a Professional Certificate specifically designed for Defence and related industry personnel. Delivered fully online, this Professional Certificate can be taken as a stand-alone course, as a building block as part of the Adelaide University Defence Professional Certificates or may also be used as credit for the Master of Engineering (Systems).

The course aims to empower learners with the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct thorough and effective test and evaluation (T&E) processes for assurance of complex systems, contributing to better-informed decision-making and system improvements. On completion of this course the learners will be able to comprehend T&E principles and methods, evaluate systems using the scientific approach, design and implement data collection processes, and select, justify and implement an appropriate approach to system assurance. By applying this knowledge and skills, learners will develop critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills through group projects and case studies to effectively gather evidence on which to evaluate complex systems through the T&E process.

What you'll learn

By completing the Professional Certificate in Principles of Test and Evaluation, you will:

  • Understand and evaluate the principles and methods of Test and Evaluation (T&E) in the context of systems engineering.
  • Apply T&E principles to complex systems from concept genesis through realisation and lifecycle sustainment.
  • Develop the elemental components of a T&E program, recognising the need for currency in the field of interest.
  • Critically appraise relationships between T&E requirements and other disciplines, including engineering, commercial, procurement, legal, finance, and international contexts.
  • Evaluate critical issues, create solution‑independent evaluation criteria, and monitor progress following solution selection.
  • Recognise the relationship between T&E and other disciplines, and the role of T&E in the systems engineering lifecycle.
  • Apply the scientific method to design and conduct rigorous test and evaluation processes.
  • Articulate solution‑independent measures of effectiveness, suitability, and performance to guide evaluation.
  • Understand the fundamentals of developmental, acceptance, and operational T&E, and their application in defence and industry.
  • Assess environmental conditions and threat factors in planning and conducting evaluations.
  • Develop team‑based T&E strategies and master plans, ensuring collaborative and coordinated approaches.
  • Understand the legal aspects of T&E, including international treaties and agreements.
  • Utilise T&E resources, such as test ranges, facilities, and modelling and simulation tools.
  • Apply Model‑Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to support T&E activities.
  • Plan, conduct, execute, and report test results, ensuring systems meet quality, safety, and performance standards.
