English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Hub

About the English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) Hub

As universities worldwide expand their English taught programs, educators are increasingly asked to teach complex content in English, often with little dedicated support. EMI training bridges that gap, giving lecturers and teachers the language, strategies and confidence to teach effectively in English.

To support this growing need, the EMI Hub brings together the English Language Centre’s EMI expertise and Adelaide University’s academic teaching experience. Through the Hub, educators can access professional learning short courses delivered in Adelaide, online and in-country, as well as practical resources, research and a growing international community of EMI practitioners.

Who is this for

Our range of EMI short courses is suitable for educators who teach, or plan to teach, academic content in English. This includes:

  • Tertiary lecturers teaching content subjects in English
  • School educators transitioning to EMI environments
  • Postgraduate Education students
  • Final-year Education undergraduates

There are no formal language entry requirements; however, a minimum English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 5.5 or above is recommended to maximise learning outcomes.

Public EMI

Our public EMI Short Course is a practical, 40-hour face-to-face short course delivered in Adelaide.

The course equips participants with effective strategies for delivering academic content in English while supporting student understanding, engagement and participation. Through interactive workshops, guided reflection and teaching practice, participants build confidence in teaching in English and develop practical techniques they can apply immediately in their own classrooms.

Teaching through English today looks very different from just a few years ago. EMI classrooms are more linguistically diverse, interaction-focused and increasingly shaped by AI-assisted learning. The course is regularly reviewed and updated in response to emerging teaching practices and participant feedback, ensuring it remains relevant, practical and responsive to contemporary EMI classrooms.

EMI course structure

The course is structured around three integrated modules combining teaching methodology, language development and practical application.

Module 1: Teaching Methodologies (26 hours)

This module introduces practical strategies to help educators move beyond lecture-based teaching towards a more student centred, active learning approach. Participants will observe demonstrations, analyse effective techniques, and practise through peer teaching to confidently apply these methods in their classrooms.

Module 2: Language Enhancement for the EMI Classroom (8 hours)

This module strengthens participants’ classroom language and communication skills to support clear instruction, effective classroom management, and engaging delivery. Educators will develop greater awareness of how to use language purposefully to meet student needs and enhance learning.

Module 3: Teaching Practice (6 hours)

In this module, participants prepare and deliver sample lessons to apply the strategies and techniques learned throughout the short course. By practicing in this way, and through the feedback garnered from peers and the class teacher, the methodologies introduced will be deepened and internalised.

Users can select the amount of English taught content they wish to introduce into classes, and filter recommendations by discipline, delivery mode, preparation time and the proportion of English used in class. Participants continue to have access upon completion of their short course.

EMI Graduate

Student testimonial

"The most useful part of the program was being introduced to a range of practical teaching techniques and theories. They have been very helpful for my current course, and I now have many new ideas for designing active learning courses."
