The Charles and Frank Fenner Research Scholarship in Geographical and Environmental Studies is funded from a bequest from Emeritus Professor Frank Fenner, who graduated in medicine at the University of Adelaide in 1983. Emeritus Professor Frank Fenner CMG MBE AC is credited with overseeing the eradication of smallpox and controlling Australia’s rabbit plague through the introduction of myxomatosis. Professor Frank Fenner’s father, Charles Fenner, was also associated with the University, being integral in establishing geography studies at the University.
The scholarship supports a full-time PhD or MPhil student with research costs, including but not limited to travel, equipment, data, or data collection.
The successful applicant will receive a lump sum payment of up to $7,500 to support their research.

Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for this scholarship, you must:
- Be enrolled in a full-time Graduate Research program at the University in the School of Society and Culture; and
- Be undertaking research in the areas of Geography or Environmental Studies.
Selection criteria
The scholarship will be awarded via a competitive selection process managed by the Adelaide University Graduate Research School, based on academic merit, research potential, benefit of the research costs to the applicant’s Higher Degree by Research program and relevance to Geography or Environmental Studies.Preference will be given to candidates whose research is primarily field-based.
