The Whyalla Student Support Grant has been established by Adelaide University to provide financial assistance to students directly or indirectly affected by the redundancies at the Whyalla Steelworks.
The grant is available to students enrolled in a 100% online, undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program at Adelaide University. It is open to students from the Whyalla region, as well as students living elsewhere who rely on financial support from a family or household member in the Whyalla community who have been directly or indirectly impacted by the closure of the blast furnace and associated redundancies.
The value of the Grant is $3,000 payable in one-lump sum direct to the student following confirmation of enrolment in the second half of 2026.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must:
- Be enrolled on a part-time or full-time basis in a 100% online, undergraduate or postgraduate coursework program at Adelaide University
- Be from the Whyalla region, or living elsewhere but relying on financial support from a family or household member in the Whyalla community who have been directly or indirectly impacted by the closure of the blast furnace and associated redundancies.
- Be an Australian Citizen, permanent resident of Australia, New Zealand Citizen or holder of a permanent humanitarian visa
Selection criteria
Selection of the successful candidate will be made according to:
- Evidence that the applicant, their family or household has been directly affected by redundancies associated with the closure of the Whyalla Steelworks blast furnace; or
- Documentary evidence of the applicant’s residential postcode and/or evidence of their connection to the Whyalla region and a written statement outlining how the applicant, their family or household has been indirectly affected by the redundancies and how the grant would assist the applicant in continuing their studies.

- Students receiving other Adelaide University Scholarships and/or Grants may apply for this Grant
