Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2024: Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud

Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud

Each year in July, communities across Australia come together to commemorate the rich history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples during NAIDOC Week. While serving as reminders of the vibrant traditions and tenacity of First Nations communities, these celebrations also offer a platform for the ongoing pursuit of justice, equality, and the recognition of First Nations voices.

This year's NAIDOC Week theme is "Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud." This theme promotes an unapologetic celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and culture. It encourages reclaiming narratives, loudening silenced voices, and an unwavering commitment to equality. It invites every Australian to listen, learn, and engage in meaningful dialogue, fostering a society where the wisdom and contributions of First Nations peoples are fully valued and respected.

At Wirltu Yarlu, The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education unit at The University of Adelaide, we echo this year's theme in our commitment to making a lasting impact on First Nations peoples and culture through education. This dedication aligns with the fire symbol during NAIDOC Week – representing the enduring strength, vitality, and connection to the land of the First Nations community passed down through generations. Today, more than ever, education serves as a conduit to keep this flame burning brightly, fostering understanding, respect, and sharing the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage that enriches our nation.

As we celebrate NAIDOC Week, remember that our actions can contribute to a stronger, more respectful bond between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians. You can step up by displaying the National NAIDOC Week Poster, learning the meanings of local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander place names and words, inviting Elders or First Nations people to provide insights into their culture, or participating in the long standing landmark  event, the 2024 NAIDOC SA March on Friday, July 12, from 11:00 a.m. at Tarndanyangga (Victoria Square).

Through collective efforts, we can ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities' stories, traditions, and achievements become integral to the nation's heart. Together, let's make every week a chapter of celebration, understanding, and respect for the oldest living culture in the world.
