World Water Day 2025 'Glacier Preservation' with Tim Jarvis

Tim Jarvis

The world’s glaciers are melting at an alarming rate. This rapid loss creates risk in terms of rising sea levels and significant uncertainty around our natural water flows, impacting essential meltwater that supports drinking water, agriculture, industry, and ecosystems.

March 22nd is the UN World Water Day, and this year’s theme focuses on glacier preservation. As global temperatures continue to rise, frozen landscapes are shrinking, disrupting water cycles in unpredictable ways. But why does this matter? People worldwide face increased risks of extreme natural events such as droughts and rising sea levels, all driven by climate change.

Tim Jarvis AM, a member of the Environment Institute Advisory Board, is uniquely positioned to shed light on this issue. An environmental scientist, polar explorer, adventurer, climber, author, and documentary filmmaker, he famously recreated the great Shackleton’s and Mawson’s Antarctic expeditions (now a film in Netflix 2023), Tim reveals the legacy of Shackleton while facing impossible odds.

As Tim is the only person to authentically recreate Shackleton’s journey of survival, he has created an immersive experience. Thin Ice VR is a 20-minute historical recreating of the Antarctic environment in 3D. The experience allows participants to follow in Shackleton’s footsteps, coming to realisation that the once icy environment that Shackleton and his crew explored, has now transformed due to the rapid effects of climate change.

His documentary, 25zero (2016), captures the journey of Tim and his team as they search for some of the world’s most vulnerable glaciers, many of which are hidden within tropical regions. The film delivers a powerful message: within 25 years, many of these ancient rivers of ice may vanish. Tim and his team travel as far as the Equator to find these remaining glaciers, offering visual proof of climate change's rapid and far-reaching impact. The 25zero project underscores the urgent need for action, even in the most remote parts of the world. Tim and his team are now working on a documentary series that will explore the remaining majestic glaciers, the devastating implications of their disappearance, and the global call for immediate, collective action.
