This ‘state-of-the-art’ review describes the development and current status of calcium ion (Ca2+) sensors in tracing Ca2+ of cells, with a focus on the relevance of Ca2+ to insulin secretion in the pancreatic islets that govern metabolic homeostasis. Insights into Ca2+ sensors have a high potential to facilitate better understanding of islet function and development of novel interventions.

Considerable attention has been given to understanding the biological effects of low-dose ionizing radiation exposure at levels slightly above background. However, relatively few studies have been performed to examine the inverse, where natural background radiation is removed.
