The legislation listed below has been identified as being relevant to projects and activities that the school has undertaken in the past.  This legislation may be relevant to your project or activity, as may other legislation that has not been listed.

It is your responsibility to identify and comply with the legislation that applies to your project or activity.  If you need further assistance, contact your supervisor or the school’s Local Compliance Officers in the first instance (listed below).  They will be able to direct you to staff who are familiar with the legislation.

3 Animal Welfare Act 1985 (SA)

An Act for the promotion of animal welfare; and for other purposes.

3 Australian Code for the Care and Use of Animals for Scientific Purposes (Cth)

The Code encompasses all aspects of the care and use of animals for scientific purposes where the aim is to acquire, develop or demonstrate knowledge or techniques in any area of science—for example, medicine, biology, agriculture, veterinary and other animal sciences, industry and teaching.

Compliance with the Code is a prerequisite for receipt of NHMRC funding. From 1 January 2014, the NHMRC Funding Agreement will reflect the need for compliance with the 8th edition of the Code.

4 Antarctic Treaty (Environment Protection) Act 1980 (Cth)

An Act relating to the protection and conservation of the environment of the Antarctic.

4 Aquaculture Act 2001 (SA)

An Act to regulate marine and inland aquaculture; and for other purposes.

3 Civil Aviation Act 1988 (Cth)

An Act to establish a Civil Aviation Safety Authority with functions relating to civil aviation, in particular the safety of civil aviation, and for related purposes.

Civil Aviation Safety Regulations 1998 (Cth) Part 101 sets out the requirements for the operation of unmanned aircraft
3 Dangerous Substances Act 1979 (SA)

An Act to regulate the keeping, handling, transporting, conveyance, use and disposal, and the quality, of dangerous substances; and for other purposes.

4 Defence Act 1903 (Cth)

An Act to provide for the Naval and Military Defence and Protection of the Commonwealth and of the several States.

4 Energy Products (Safety and Efficiency) Act 2000 (SA) An Act to make provisions relating to the safety, performance, energy efficiency and labelling of products powered by electricity, gas or some other energy source; and for other purposes.
3 Explosives Act 1936 (SA)

An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to explosives.

3 Firearms Act 1977 (SA)

An Act to control the possession, use and sale of firearms; and for other purposes.

4 Gas Act 1997 (SA) An Act to regulate the gas supply industry; to make provision for safety and technical standards for gas infrastructure, installations and fitting work; to repeal the Gas Act 1988; and for other purposes.
3 Harbors and Navigation Act 1993 (SA)

An Act to provide for the administration, development and management of harbours; to provide for safe navigation in South Australian waters; and for other purposes.

3 Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law Act 2012 (Cth)

An Act to provide for a national law about marine safety for certain commercial vessels, and for related purposes.

NOTE: This Act operates in tandem with the Harbors and Navigation Act 1993 (SA), with the National Law superseding State Law for domestic commercial vessels (including vessels used for research).
