You Belong

Every student has the right to feel seen, respected and valued here.

You belong

What is You Belong?

Diversity enriches our campuses. But students told us they don't always feel they belong here. You Belong acts on the barriers students report, celebrating your right to be seen, respected and valued.

The City Campus East mural was shaped by student voices across all campuses. Illustrator Cécile Gariépy brought it to life — a reminder that you belong.

If something's happened or you feel disconnected, you don't need to solve it alone.

You shouldn’t have to change to be part of Adelaide University

Diversity is our differences. Inclusion is what makes room for them. Belonging is what happens when you know you matter.

It’s being able to be yourself, take part and access opportunities without barriers. Your culture, gender, sexuality, disability, age, financial situation, caring responsibilities, work and lived experiences all shape who you are. Every part of you belongs here.

Belonging is a powerful contributor to wellbeing. When you feel connected, valued and accepted, you’re more likely to be engaged, supported and able to succeed.

As a queer chronically ill person, seeing queer and disabled people represented in art and around the campus I spend most of my time warms my heart and makes me feel at home.

Everyone, including international students like me, feels valued and accepted … our presence, research and cultural identity are not just welcomed, but cherished.

What builds belonging

Belonging is built, not left to chance. Small everyday moments, on campus or online, make the difference.

Start the conversation

Speak to the person sitting next to you in class. Most people are waiting for someone else to go first.

Ask, don’t assume

People’s names, pronouns, backgrounds and circumstances aren’t obvious. Asking is respectful. Guessing usually isn’t.

Make room

Notice who isn’t being included in the group chat, the study group or the conversation, and bring them in.

Say something when something’s off

You don’t need a speech. “That’s not okay” is enough.

What gets in the way

Belonging is undermined by everyday interactions, systems and environments that make life harder for some students.

Subtle, often unintentional comments or behaviours that invalidate or stereotype.

Unequal or unfair treatment because of gender, sexuality, disability or cultural background.

Behaviours, attitudes or systems that disadvantage or marginalise students because of race or ethnicity.

Assumptions that shape decisions, interactions and expectations without anyone intending them to.

Anything that stops students accessing opportunities on equal terms, including our own policies and processes.

Have you experienced or witnessed any of the above interactions?

Adelaide University is committed to providing a safe and respectful environment. We encourage you to report behaviour that is intimidating, abusive, disrespectful or threatening.
