Course overview
An introduction to the biology of microorganisms of importance in and to animals. Topics to be considered include form and function of major groups of microorganisms (including bacteria, viruses, fungi and protozoans), classification and identification, pathogenic features, symbiotic and commensal lifestyles, basic concepts of physiology and function, reproduction and life cycles, practical skills for manipulating these microorganisms and studying their activities.

Course learning outcomes
- Describe the diversity, classification, and biological characteristics of microorganisms and viruses relevant to wildlife, production, and companion animals, including their physiology, function, reproduction, life cycles, pathogenic features, and antimicrobial resistance.
- Demonstrate laboratory skills in handling microorganisms
- Describe the relationships between microbial ecosystems and animal hosts, and how these interactions influence animal health and function.
- Describe basic immunological processes as relevant to immunology in general and as to how they apply specifically to different animal species
- Synthesise information with data and present findings
- Exhibit skills in problem solving, critical analysis, team work and communication
