Course overview

This course explores connections between nutrition in early life and its impact on our metabolism, physiology, and healthy ageing. A healthy start to life is critical and nutritional imbalances early in life can increase chronic disease risk. We are living longer, and this comes with an additional set of nutritional challenges. The aim of this course is for students to investigate how early life nutrition impacts future chronic disease risk and how nutrition and metabolism are linked with healthy ageing. Students will also explore how our genetic makeup contributes to healthy ageing and explores the feasibility of personalised nutrition.

Course learning outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the physiological and genetic mechanisms controlling macronutrient metabolism.
  • Discuss the role of human diet on metabolism, and physiology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the interrelated roles of nutrition, genetics and metabolism for the prevention and treatment of chronic disease.
  • Critically evaluate nutritional health information communicated to the public.
  • Explain the role of metabolism and nutritional health in healthy aging.
  • Demonstrate professional communication skills across a range of delivery modes.
