Course overview
In this course students will develop advanced knowledge and skills to critically research a complex design problem using research-by design methods, with a focus on designing atmospheres in the context of broad sustainability systems.
To interrogate relationships between interior architecture, its context, and user communities, students will experiment and synthesise situated design theory, critically interrogate spatial outcomes, and use independent judgement to identify speculative design options for resolution in IA Honours Project 1.
This supports the program’s intent to advance knowledge in interior architecture and human environments by enabling students to act as ethical research-informed designers in professional practice, and as a pathway for future research.
Course learning outcomes
- Undertake contextual research using a critical systems perspective in preparation for use to solve a complex interior design problem
- Using research-by-design methods, create visual and spatial design theory relating to the interior design problem and use judgement to select options for spatial and atmospheric outcomes
- Demonstrate interior architecture research planning and management, and integration of relevant Australian codes and standards, in ongoing research and design practice and outcomes to a professional level
- Coherently communicate research processes, outcomes, and critical reflection, using 2D and 3D visual communication, text, and verbal communication, to professional level for interior designer and client audiences
- Evaluate and critically reflect on design practice and design outcomes and demonstrate actions taken throughout the research process.
