Course overview

This course will provide students with detailed knowledge of cardiac haemodynamics and the application of this to complex valvular disease. Haemodynamic principles and calculations for estimation of valve area, regurgitant volumes and the correct application of the PISA method as well as valvular stenosis/ regurgitation, prosthetic valves (including percutaneous valves), valve repair and complications of valvular disease. Diseases of the aorta will also be covered.

Course learning outcomes

  • Apply advanced haemodynamics in the assessment of valvular heart disease and prosthetic heart valve function across a range of clinical scenarios.
  • Analyse and interpret advanced haemodynamic calculations to determine the severity of various valvular lesions.
  • Research and discuss in detail common aetiologies and echocardiographic features of mitral, aortic, tricuspid and pulmonic stenosis and regurgitation.
  • Apply advanced clinical assessment methods to rate the severity of valvular disease, including the evaluation of post prosthetic/ percutaneous valve replacement and valvular repair.
  • Explain the haemodynamic effects (early and late) of valvular disease on the cardiovascular system, including the signs and symptoms of significant valvular disease.
  • Discuss, in detail, diseases affecting the aorta including dissection, aneurysm and coarctation, their echocardiographic appearance and methods of assessing their severity.
  • Demonstrate continual progression through supervised clinical training requirements.

  • Must have completed all of HLTH5902 Cardiovascular Physiology and Pathology/RADI5006 Professional Issues for Sonographers/RADI5007 Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation/RADI5026 Cardiovascular Anatomy and Embryology

  • If the following course has not already been completed THEN must be enrolled in RADI5013 Clinical Applications of Echocardiography
