Bringing university study closer to regional students
For many young people in regional communities, university can feel like a future goal that is still some distance away. Foundation Studies at Regional Technical Colleges has been designed to change that.
Through a unique partnership between Adelaide University Pathways College, Adelaide University Online and selected Regional Technical Colleges, Year 11 students will have the opportunity to begin university-level study while still completing secondary school.
The program provides an early introduction to higher education, helping students build the academic confidence, skills and knowledge needed to successfully transition into future university study. By combining online learning with dedicated face-to-face support, students can experience university learning in a structured and supportive environment within their local community.
A supported pathway to higher education
Launching with pilot cohorts at the Port Augusta Technical College and Mount Gambier Technical College, the program is designed for Year 11 students who are interested in exploring future university pathways while continuing their senior secondary education.
Students will undertake Foundation Studies courses that introduce key academic skills expected in higher education, while receiving ongoing support from university staff and local Technical College teams.
The program has been intentionally designed to provide both flexibility and connection. Students will engage in university learning online while benefiting from face-to-face academic support and guidance delivered through their Technical College.
Learning through a blended model
Foundation Studies will be delivered through a combination of online learning, virtual workshops and on-campus support.
During the first ten weeks, students will participate in online courses through the UniStart program. Throughout this period, they will be supported by academic staff, pastoral care teams and regional pathways staff, who will provide regular check-ins and guidance.
In the final weeks of the program, students come together at their Technical College for intensive face-to-face sessions focused on strengthening academic skills, completing assessment tasks and preparing for future study.
This blended approach allows students to develop independence as learners while ensuring they remain connected to a strong network of support.
Building the skills that matter
The Foundation Studies curriculum focuses on the academic capabilities that underpin success at university and beyond.
Students will explore areas such as:
- Academic writing and communication
- Numeracy and problem solving
- Critical thinking and information analysis
- Research and study skills.
They will also have the opportunity to choose from discipline-based electives that introduce concepts in areas such as biosciences or human behaviour.
Collectively, these courses help students become more confident learners while providing valuable insight into the expectations of university study.
Learning locally, thinking globally
All face-to-face learning components will take place within the Technical College environment, giving students access to familiar learning spaces, technology, internet connectivity and dedicated study areas.
By delivering university preparation programs within regional communities, the initiative aims to increase access to higher education opportunities while supporting students to pursue their aspirations without needing to leave their regional area during secondary school.
A program designed to grow
The Foundation Studies Regional Technical Colleges program will commence with small pilot cohorts, ensuring a high-quality learning experience and allowing the model to be refined over time.
This approach provides a strong foundation for future growth, creating opportunities for more regional students to engage with university study earlier and develop confidence in their higher education journey.
For students considering university after school, Foundation Studies offers an opportunity to take the first step while still at college, building the skills, experience and confidence needed to succeed in the future.
