Design Construct offers architecture and design students the chance to work on real projects from concept to completion. Established in 1993, the program has grown into one of the world’s largest student construction initiatives, delivering remarkable buildings that have received national and international recognition.
Through direct involvement in designing, building and collaborating on site, students develop practical skills essential for professional practice. With a strong focus on real clients, community needs, and teamwork in live construction environments, the experience bridges the gap between study and industry.

How students can get involved
When participating in Design Construct coursework, students will be involved in multiple aspects of a project. This valuable process prepares them for professional life through hands-on involvement, including
- developing design proposals
- collaborating with clients
- developing building and design documentation, and.
- coordinating and undertaking various stages of construction.
Each project passes through several phases:
- Design: students are briefed, they survey sites, and produce design proposals
- Design development: students undertake intensive courses, developing their designs in small groups
- Planning and certification: students work with staff to respond to planning and certification requirements for their designs
- Building: two-week pre-fabrication and fabrication sessions are run during semester breaks and, in some cases, students are also involved in on-site building.
