Celebrating the Adelaide-Nottingham Alliance

The growing reach and impact of the Adelaide-Nottingham Alliance (ANA) was celebrated at the second ANA Symposium, which was hosted by the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom in May 2024.

The Adelaide-Nottingham Alliance builds on years of collaboration in research and education between the University of Adelaide and the University of Nottingham, with the aim of deepening the impact of the partnership, increasing research collaboration to tackle global challenges, and promoting a global mindset among students.

Approximately 80 staff and students from both institutions, including researchers, PhD students, undergraduate students and professional service colleagues, attended the 2024 event.

This year’s Symposium began with welcome speeches from University of Nottingham Vice-Chancellor, Professor Shearer West CBE, and University of Adelaide Vice-Chancellor, Professor Peter Høj AC. Keynote speeches were also delivered by University of Adelaide Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement), Professor Jessica Gallagher, and University of Nottingham Research Fellow, Dr Kateryna Dugina.

The long-standing student exchange agreement between the two institutions was also renewed at the Symposium, with highlights from the student mobility program experience presented by University of Adelaide students who are currently studying at the University of Nottingham on exchange.

In the afternoon, the Symposium focused on research collaboration within the three Alliance collaboration themes – Global Food Systems, Intelligent Health, and Sustainable Futures. This included presentations from 2023 Seed Fund recipients and the Joint PhD 3 Minute Thesis.

Highlights from the Intelligent Health theme included a significant grant from Diabetes UK to the two institutions as part of a £1 million research project using pioneering neuroimaging techniques to inform the development of new personalised dietary and drug treatments for people living with a range of diabetic diseases.

Global Food Systems showcased the key role University of Nottingham researchers are playing in the University of Adelaide-led Centre for Excellence in Plants for Space, which aims to create on-demand, zero-waste high-efficiency plants and products to address sustainability challenges in Space and on Earth.

Sustainable Futures also previewed the First International Conference of Net Zero Carbon Built Environment, which will be held at the University of Nottingham in July 2024.

More information about the ANA and its work can be found on the Global Engagement website.

The 2025 ANA Symposium will be hosted by the University of Adelaide in Adelaide.
