Course overview

In this course students will develop advanced knowledge and skills to critically resolve a complex design problem using research-by design methods, with a focus on designing atmospheres in the context of broad sustainability systems.

Building on IA Honours Research 1, students will plan, experiment, synthesise, and translate contextual knowledge, situated design theory, technical material and construction knowledge, and relevant Australian design codes and standards, to creatively and independently research and design an advanced speculative design. Students will professionally communicate outcomes underpinned by critical process reflection.

This supports the program’s intent to advance knowledge in interior architecture and human environments by enabling students to act as ethical research-informed designers in professional practice, and as a pathway for future research

Course learning outcomes

  • Building on IA Honours Research 1, identify occupant characteristics and independently create a brief for a complex design problem addressing atmosphere design and human environments design in the context of broad sustainability systems
  • Building on IA Honours Research 1, undertake, translate, and integrate research to a complex design problem using research-by-design method to critically interpret relevant systems and create a speculative, provocative, and atmospheric research-informed design outcome.
  • Resolve the interior architecture technology, detailing, and documentation, for the proposed design to demonstrate advanced constructability while maintaining intended atmosphere and addressing broad sustainability systems
  • Demonstrate interior architecture project planning and management, and integration of relevant Australian codes and standards, in ongoing research and design practice and outcomes to a professional level
  • Coherently communicate project processes, outcomes, and critical reflection, using 2D and 3D visual communication, text, and verbal communication, to professional level for interior designer and client audiences
