Short getaway
Last weekend, my boyfriend and I decided to take the advice of the South Australian Government’s latest tourist campaign and ‘holiday at home’. My extended family is fortunate enough to own a beach shack at Middleton on the Fleurieu Peninsula, and so we headed off down there on Friday night, staying until Sunday.
Pretty unsurprisingly, it was great to get away. A mark of our relative privilege sure, but as young people we had become pretty accustomed to constant travel, or at least constantly planning travel, whether international or, more commonly, domestic, and since the COVID crisis begun we have settled into a more localised version of life, without much complaint.
However, upon getting only an hour out of the city and only for a couple of days, I was reminded of the virtues of changing up your surrounds. It was nice to see different landscapes, taste some different foods and just enjoy a break from the relative monotony of everyday life.
We took a long walk on the frosty beach-front, drank some wines in a nicely warmed living room with a view of the ocean and joined some friends for dinner. Very wholesome content for sure, but an altogether very pleasant time.
There are plenty of great places to visit in South Australia that we have probably all had a tendency to overlook in the past. Now, with travelling to more exotic shores off-limits, I would really recommend taking a couple of days, setting off for a drive, and giving yourself a nice mid-year refresher.
