Re-focusing for when you get off track
A few to support you in staying on track
Don’t panic. Student life can be a whirlwind of competition, academics, and the pursuit of success. The desire to outperform your peers can often overshadow the passion that led you to your chosen field of study.
When the relentless pace of academic life becomes overwhelming, consider these practices to rejuvenate your mind:
-
Breath: Take a moment to breathe. Inhale for 6 seconds, hold for 3 seconds and exhale for 12 seconds. Repeat this process ten times to clear your mental fog and see the world with fresh eyes.
-
Taking a stroll: Staying at home for a whole day? Step outside and embrace the world beyond your textbooks. A short walk through your neighbourhood or city can provide much-needed clarity and perhaps spark new ideas.
-
Music: If you are stuck in your work and cannot process the essay anymore, have some rest and listen to music that calms you down or makes you exuberant.
-
Sports: Whether that is playing or watching a game, getting engaged in sports can contribute to your well-being. I personally found watching baseball online quite refreshing as well (I know this is a very minor sport in AUS).
-
Books: Putting your thoughts in the book and having a conversation with authors from different eras is a fun activity that you can forget your time to do. It can be a delightful escape from your academic pressures.
As a student, the journey can be challenging, laden with uncertainties and future worries. But it's also a unique period where you have the time and resources to explore, grow your skills, and ponder your life's purpose. Amidst the chaos of academic life, it's vital to cherish the present moment.
Use these tools and practices to reclaim your focus, regain your passion, and maintain a balance between academic excellence and personal well-being. Remember that the pursuit of knowledge and personal growth should be a joyful adventure, not a race to outdo others. Embrace the journey, enjoy the process, and let these strategies guide you towards making the most of your student life!
