Finding your motivation to get through this exam period
Exams can be intense and draining, but finding the right mindset and motivation to get through them is key.
I’ve always heard people mention bucket lists, but I never really understood the concept. I’m more of a spontaneous person. If I want to do something, I just decide in the moment and do it. Recently, during the mid-semester break, I took a trip to Sydney with a friend. We explored the city, ate at different restaurants, went to the markets, and even watched the Broadway musical, Hamilton. It was the most fun I’d had in ages, especially since uni had been taking up so much time. Then came the highlight of the trip: a horror escape room (with live actors :O).
I kid you not, this made it into my top ten life experiences. Imagine being in a real-life horror video game, trapped in an abandoned hospital, solving puzzles while being chased by a creepy creature lurking in the dark. I’m a huge horror fan, but this genuinely had me terrified. The experience felt so immersive and thrilling, it was like I’d escaped reality entirely. And the adrenaline? Unmatched. It was such a rush that I’ve now decided to put “visit escape rooms around the world” on my bucket list.
What does this have to do with exams? Life isn’t just about studying, passing exams, and achieving academic goals. Yes, those things matter, but taking time for yourself matters just as much. Finding things that excite you, that pull you out of the academic weapon grind, can actually make you feel more energised and focused when you do get back to studying. Balance is crucial, and you deserve to experience joy, even during the most stressful times.
Maybe right now you’re drowning in assignments, but don’t forget to carve out moments to do something spontaneous. Whether it’s booking a last-minute escape room adventure or just grabbing coffee with friends, those small breaks can recharge your brain and lift your spirits. It’s all about rewarding yourself with experiences that remind you life is more than just exams.
So why not start your own bucket list? It doesn't have to be extravagant. Just things that make you feel alive, things you’ll look forward to after exams. It could be anything from a short road trip to trying out a new hobby. Sometimes, having these small goals gives you something to focus on beyond your studies, making the hard work feel more worth it. Plus, you never know what amazing memories you’ll create along the way.
As exams approach, keep pushing yourself, but also remember to take those moments for yourself. They may just be the motivation you need to get through the stress, with a sense of excitement about what's waiting on the other side. Yours sincerely, an escape room addict.
