Training

Training is a core component of the biological compliance framework.

All staff and students undertaking work with imported biological materials, GMOs or biohazardous samples, or those who access or work in a physical containment (PC) facility are required to undertake training, as described below.

Additionally, task and equipment specific training and SOPs should be provided prior to commencement of any new activity.

Working in non-university facilities

University personnel working physically within another organisation's premises/facility should check with the IBC of the other organisation to determine the training requirements for investigators.

Personnel should be aware of the necessity to follow the rules, regulations or policies of another IBC if working in another organisation's premises or facilities and thereby the requirement to meet both organisation's compliance protocols.

  • Biosecurity training

All persons who import biological goods using a Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry import permit should complete the short, online module ‘Introduction to biosecurity’, available in the MyUni Biological Compliance course.

Staff and students who work in Approved Arrangement premises must complete additional training, as follows:

    • Approved Arrangement training via the MyUni Biological Compliance course (free course) or complete the Approved Arrangement Accreditation for AA Accredited Persons (Classes 1-8) training via the DAFF Guardian system (user pays for course).
    • A documented local area induction.
    • Training in any task or equipment specific biosecurity procedures in the facilities in which they work.
  • Gene Technology training

People working with gene technology are encouraged to view the short, online module 'Gene technology and Genetically modified organisms' in the MyUni Biological Compliance course

In addition, the following training is mandatory for people working with gene technology.

All persons who work with GMOs must have read and understood the following:

    • Guidelines for the Transport, Storage and Disposal of GMOs (all sections relevant to the physical containment (PC) level and type of organisms in the application.
    • National Framework of Ethical Principles in Gene Technology (Part 5.1, pp. 10-11).
    • The Record of Assessment and approved application for the work they are undertaking.

People who work with GMOs in a physical containment facility must also complete all required training described under 'Physical Containment (PC) Facility Training' below.

  • Microbiological Biosafety training

All persons who work with risk group 2 or higher microorganisms, or with samples or organisms known or likely to contain these should complete the short, online module ‘Introduction to biosafety’, available in the MyUni Biological Compliance course.

  • Physical Containment (PC) Facility training

All persons who work in Physical Containment facilities must receive training in the behavioural conditions relevant to that class of facility and every person who accesses a PC facility must provide a signed and dated record of training to the Facility Manager. This requirement applies to all personnel entering the facility, including visitors and contractors (e.g., maintenance staff, cleaners, and other service providers).

    Record of training forms:

Please select from the following Record of Training forms depending on the class of persons working in the facility. A signed and dated copy of the record of training must be provided to the Facility Manager, and a copy can also be provided to the IBC using the link in the form.

Note that some facilities have specific training requirements applied by the OGTR or IBC. Where this applies, a facility-specific induction and Record of Training will be provided by the Facility Manager or Supervisor.

The Facility Manager must ensure that all personnel are adequately trained before commencing work and keep copies of the signed and dated Record of Training, which will be made available to the OGTR if requested. A signed copy should also be returned to the IBC using the link supplied within the Record of Training form.

Online PC2 facility training for staff and students working in PC2 facilities

The IBC provides an online training module for staff and students covering the requirements for working in PC2 facilities, available for self-enrolment through MyUni.

The online course must be completed by all research staff and students working in PC2 facilities. The IBC maintains a register of all personnel who have completed this training, which is made available to Facility Managers upon request.
