My favourite queer movies and series
There comes a time in isolation where all I want to do is curl up and re-watch some well-loved movies and TV shows. So, I decided to make a list of all my favourite queer films and TV shows, divided into categories. This list is not exhaustive and I am sure I have left so many good ones out!
Sweet comedies
These are the heart-warming movies and TV shows that make me laugh. This is the biggest category because comedies are great.
- Handsome Devil - this Irish film is extremely under-rated and everyone should watch it!
- Please Like Me - even though this show has so many cringey awkward moments, it is too relatable and makes me laugh every time.
- Broad City - very silly and very funny.
- Love, Simon - the coming of age movie that I wish came out when I was in high school.
- Sex Education - hooray for this adorable series which tackles sexuality in a realistic and inclusive way!
- The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - an Australian musical classic.
- Rent - the best musical of all time.
- Tangerine - a gorgeous film shot on an Iphone about survival and friendship.
- But I'm a Cheerleader - a very cute film about a cheerleader who realises she's gay.
Beautiful artsy films
These are the films that make me cry and gaze out the window waiting for my one true love.
- Brokeback Mountain - I have never cried in a film so much.
- Pariah - a moving film about the difficulties of queer adolescence.
- Blue is the Warmest Colour - a beautiful, if somewhat unrealistic, story about first love.
- Call Me By Your Name - another beautiful and unrealistic story about first love (unless you have a villa in the Italian countryside).
- Carol - another beautiful and unrealistic... okay I'm sensing a theme here. Just let me soak up the romance in peace.
Dramatic Shows
And then there are the TV shows that I watch for the sheer drama!
- The L Word - honestly one of the most ridiculous, dramatic shows I have ever watched. And yes I have seen all 7 seasons.
- Lip Service - this show is basically the L Word but set in Scotland.
- The Bi Life - a dating show where all the contestants are bisexual. It's great.
- Orange is the New Black - a prison drama with lots of small queer love stories.
- Skins - this show is kinda nostalgic for me and nothing will ever beat the romance between Emily and Naomi in season 3.
- Sense8 - a fast-paced speculative fiction show that I adore.
- Queer Eye - a cute show with some dramatic makeovers.
My ultimate favourite
- Pride - this movie takes the cake because it is such an uplifting story about solidarity and friendship, and it manages to be funny, sad and inspiring all at once.
Happy watching!
