Grapefruit, anyone?

Grapefruit Smoothie

Grapefruit smoothie

I was given a large bag of grapefruit which I was happy to receive. Their tree was overflowing with fruit and of course I was delighted to partake in some organic produce. I don’t usually like grapefruit because they’re quite tart, but seeing as flu season is here, I thought I’d give it another try.

I asked one of my GP friends and she said that it’s a wonderfully healthy fruit to include in my breakfast. It’s high in nutrients and antioxidants, such as beta-carotene and lycopene, and it’s low in calories. It also has a high content of Vitamin C which is great for the immune system. Plus it also has a good amount of fibre which helps in giving us that feeling of fullness.

I have a very sweet tooth, so I thought the best way to start including grapefruit into my breakfast was to mix it in my smoothie and use sweet-tasting fruits like peach and mango.

  • 1 grapefruit, segmented including juice
  • 1/2 cup mango chunks
  • 1/2 cup peach chunks
  • 1/2 cup yellow carrot chunks
  • 1 1/2 cup coconut water

Add all the above into a high-powered blender and blend until smooth. Feel free to add coconut water to achieve your desired consistency. Pour into a glass and enjoy!
