Catching up with old friends
With coronavirus restrictions easing and since I'm finding myself back home I decided to catch up with an old friend I haven't seen much since high-school.
We still keep in somewhat regular contact and make sure we're checking up on each other. I was somewhat nervous I must admit. I hadn't seen my friend in a while and haven't really been out of the house much since coming home. I stressed and fussed as usual and made sure there was lots of food ready and I had some ideas for activities and conversation topics. When I had finished catching up with my friend I learnt two things.
1. I worry too much
I stressed and fussed and worried if we would have enough to do and things to talk about and nice food to eat. In the end, all of this didn't matter. The catch up went fine. We talked and discussed things like no time had passed and had a really pleasant day. All of my worry was for nothing. In the future I think I just need to stress less and go with the flow more. Things always seem to work themselves out and when it comes to friends, there really is no need to worry.
2. Catching up is tiring
I'm not sure if its because of the pandemic and my lack of socializing or that I overworked myself but by the end of the visit, I was exhausted. Ready for another 3 months of time to myself. As we transition from a country in lockdown to more freedoms and consequent socializing, I think it is going to take some time before I get the knack of it again. Social skills are that, skills. They take time to learn and use and can go away without practice. I'm not saying I've turned back into a cave man with drool dribbling down their chin, but actively listening, paying attention and engaging in conversation takes it out of me.
So here is to a good catch up and hopefully many more to come.
