A semester of mentorship
A chat with tutors after class can prove to be an invaluable resource.
I concluded my final workshop in my favourite class of the semester and found myself alone with my tutors, engaged in a candid exchange about our plans over the summer and beyond.
It was a moment of reflection, and what became abundantly clear was that my tutors had transcended the traditional roles of instructors and had become mentors in the truest sense. Here is some guidance that they provided with me:
- Interactive Teaching Style: For those like me, who entered the world of IT/CS with no prior background, the path can seem daunting. Throughout the semester, my tutors proved to be indispensable allies. Their friendly demeanour and approachability made seeking their assistance a breeze. Their explanations were not just clear but comprehensive, ensuring that no topic remained shrouded in uncertainty. They made the learning experience more collaborative and rewarding.
- Career Advice: The undergraduate journey can often feel like navigating through a fog: you lose your way after you finish your degree. My tutors, who were already working in the industry, provided invaluable advice that whatever the degree is, my passion for study is the beacon to have a meaningful career.
- Travel Plan: It was unexpected, but I promised my tutor to visit his hometown when I have the chance to go to his country. While unrelated to the course material, this experience underscored the idea that our mentors' backgrounds can offer extraordinary journeys beyond textbooks.
What I treasure most from this semester's mentorship is the profound lesson of humility in the face of the unknown. I strongly feel that I was lucky to have tutors who not only generously shared their wealth of knowledge but also exemplified the importance of seeking advice when faced with uncertainty.
Reflecting on the invaluable time I've spent with them; I've resolved to pay it forward. I aspire to become a mentor like them, guiding junior students in subjects that I'm passionate about, and thus perpetuating this positive cycle for years to come.
If you too encounter mentors or educators who ignite your curiosity or inspire you to learn more, do not hesitate to contact them. The possibilities that can emerge from such interactions are boundless, and the impact they have on your student life can be transformative and unforgettable. So, seize this opportunity to nurture mentorships and let them make your educational journey more invaluable!
